AI Scams Are Changing the Rules—Here’s What Every Family Should Know

AI Scams Are Changing the Rules—Here’s What Every Family Should Know

For years, we’ve told people to “trust your instincts” when something feels off. That advice used to work.

Today, it’s no longer enough.

Scams haven’t gone away—they’ve evolved. And one of the biggest changes we’re seeing right now is the use of artificial intelligence to make scams look and sound incredibly real.

In my work with seniors and their families, I’m hearing more stories that begin the same way:

“It sounded exactly like them.”
“The email looked completely legitimate.”
“I didn’t think twice.”

That’s because today’s scams are no longer easy to recognize.

What’s Different Now

Artificial intelligence has given scammers new tools that remove many of the warning signs we used to rely on.

There are fewer spelling errors.
Fewer awkward phrases.
Fewer obvious red flags.

Instead, messages are polished, personal, and often urgent.

Even more concerning, scammers can now replicate voices and create highly believable scenarios that feel immediate and emotional.

The New Face of Familiar Scams

Many scams we’ve seen for years still exist—but they’ve been upgraded.

Voice Cloning Scams
One of the most alarming developments is the ability to mimic a loved one’s voice. A scammer may call sounding like a grandchild or family member in distress, asking for immediate help and urging secrecy.

AI-Generated Emails and Texts
Fraudulent messages that once looked suspicious now appear professional and credible. They may seem to come from your bank, Medicare, or a familiar company, asking you to click a link or confirm information.

Impersonation and Deepfake Technology
In some cases, scammers are using video and online profiles to impersonate trusted individuals, making interactions feel even more convincing.

Why These Scams Work

What makes these scams so effective is not just the technology—it’s the psychology behind them.

They create urgency.
They tap into trust.
They discourage you from pausing or checking with someone else.

For many people—especially those who are responsive, helpful, and used to taking care of others—that combination can be very persuasive.

A Simple but Powerful Shift

In the past, the advice was:
“If it looks suspicious, don’t trust it.”

Today, the better advice is:
“Even if it looks real, verify it.”

That shift is essential.

How to Protect Yourself

The good news is that protection doesn’t require technical expertise—just a simple process:

Pause before responding.
Do not act on urgency alone.
Verify using a separate, trusted contact method.

If you receive a call from a “family member,” hang up and call them back using a number you already have.
If you receive a message from your bank, contact the bank directly using their official website or phone number.

You are always allowed to slow things down.

Create a Safety Net

One of the most effective strategies is to create a small circle of trusted contacts—people you can call before responding to anything that feels even slightly off.

Having that extra step in place can prevent costly mistakes and provide peace of mind.

A Community Conversation

Scams are no longer just an individual issue—they’re a community issue. The more we talk about them, the more we reduce their effectiveness.

Sharing what you learn with a friend, neighbor, or family member may be the very thing that protects them.

Final Thought

Technology will continue to evolve, and unfortunately, so will scams.

But one thing remains constant:
You don’t have to respond immediately—and you don’t have to handle it alone.

Slowing down, verifying, and having a trusted system in place will protect you every time.
